Sincona sale 76, lot 1295

This specimen was lot 1285 in Sincona sale 76 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 2,200 CHF (about US$2,670 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALY | Venedig. Lodovico Manin, 1789-1797. Scudo della croce (140 Soldi) o. J. Venezia. Münzmeister Giacomo Foscarini. Selten in dieser Erhaltung. Fast FDC. NGC MS62. Feine Patina. (Italy, republic of Venice, Louis Marin, 1789-97, undated scudo of the cross, Venice mint. Rare in this condition, About uncirculated, Nicely toned.)"

Giacomo Foscarini was mintmaster 1786-89 and his term overlapped that of Lodovico Manin in 1789 only, so we assume that was when this coin was struck. It is the only one of this denomination for this ruler. The "140" shown indicates that the coin was worth 140 soldi. The tallero was also theoretically 140 soldi but contained 110 soldi of silver. By this period, Venice was a ghost of her former power, surviving only on the sufferance of her Austrian and Turkish neighbors.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 31.09 g, .948 fine silver, .947 troy oz ASW, this specimen 31.62 g.

Catalog reference: KM 749, Montenegro 3336. Gamberini 1935. Dav-1570.
