Venice (1789-97) 2 zecchini Fr-1444
This specimen was lot 2046 in Sincona sale 25 (Zürich, October 2015), where it sold for 10,500 CHF (about US$12,970 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Ludovico Manin, 1789-1797 Doppio Zecchino n. d. (1789-1797). LVDOV·MANIN / S·M· VENET / DVX. Doge kneeling l. before St. Mark Rev. SIT·T·XPE·DAT·Q·TV - REGIS· ISTE·DVCA. Christ in mandorla. Very rare. Very fine to extremely fine. Broad planchet."
The republic of Venice invented the ducat in the late 1200's and issued them more or less continuously until the final collapse in 1797. This is a rare type, tho the single ducat is common. This doge also minted one quarter (Fr-1447), one half (Fr-1446), one (Fr-1445), five, six, eight (Fr-1441), nine, ten (Fr-1439), twelve, twenty, fifty and 105 zecchini in gold.
