Venice 1789 5 soldi
This specimen was lot 992 in Steve Album Auction 52 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2025), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "VENICE: Ludovico Manin, 1789-1797, AR 5 soldi, 1789, a beautiful lustrous near mint example, PCGS graded AU58. Ludovico Manin was the last Doge of Venice, a title that had been used for over 1,000 years. The Doge was the leader of the Venetian Republic and was elected for life by the city's aristocracy." While Venice is numismatically famous for her series of gold ducats, there is a long series of minor coinage which is frequently ignored. Small change for Lodovico Manin include a one soldo (KM 732), ten soldi (KM 734), a fifteen soldi (KM 735), an eighth tallero (KM 768) and an eighth scudo (KM 737). Twenty soldi made a lira. The SCWC lists this type as undated.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 1.24 g, 0.390 fine silver, 19 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM-733 (formerly KM C119).
