Venice (1789-97) soldo
The first specimen was lot 3522 in Stephen Album sale 38 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2020), where it sold for $261.80. The catalog description[1] noted, "VENICE: Ludovico Manin, 1789-1797, BI soldo, crisp strike with traces of original luster, PCGS graded MS62." The second specimen was lot 75320 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $384. The catalog description[2] noted, "ITALY. Venice. 12 Denari, ND (1789-97) Ludovico Manin. NGC MS 63. The Doge is kneeling before St. Mark on the obverse. St. Mark standing within a circle on the reverse. Deep charcoal toning and a bold strike with noticeable underlying luster throughout. Incorrectly listed on the certificate as 12S, (soldi)." This billon coin had a face value of twelve bagattini. It is the only issue of this denomination for this ruler. While Venice is numismatically famous for her series of gold ducats, there is a long series of minor coinage which is frequently ignored. Small change for Lodovico Manin include a five soldi (KM 733), ten soldi (KM 734), a fifteen soldi (KM 735), an eighth tallero (KM 768) and an eighth scudo (KM 737). Twenty soldi made a lira.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 2.04 g, 0.031 fine silver, 19 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: Paol-69-74, KM-732, formerly KM-C118.
