Venice (1779-89)-LAF scudo Dav-1564
The first specimen was lot 25209 in Heritage sale 3015 (Long Beach, September 2011), where it sold for $2,185. The catalog description[1] noted, "Venice. Paolo Renier Scudo ND LAF (1779-89), MS63 NGC, nicely toned with deep charcoal gray patina and glossy surfaces, rare type in mint state." The second specimen was lot 31626 in Heritage sale 3107 (Chicago, May 2023), where it sold for $4,080. The catalog description[2] noted, "Italy: Venice. Paolo Renier Scudo (140 Soldi) ND (1779) LAF MS64 NGC. An outstanding example of this majestic Italian States Crown. The strike is unusually sharp and the icy gray patina is remarkably uniform. As one would expect at this near Gem condition, the luster underneath the wholesome patination is immense and provides tremendous appeal. A "Top Pop" offering." This type, struck without a date, is believed to have been issued throughout the reign of doge Paolo Renier (1779-89). The "140" shown indicates that the coin was worth 140 soldi. The tallero was also theoretically 140 soldi but contained 110 soldi of silver. By this period, Venice was a ghost of her former power, surviving only on the sufferance of her Austrian and Turkish neighbors.
Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce.
Specification: 31.09 g, .948 fine silver, .947 troy oz ASW.
