Nomisma S.p.a. E-Auction 31, lot 2538

This specimen was lot 2538 in Nomisma S.p.a. E-Auction 31 (Verona, Italy, April 2023), where it sold for 1,000 EUR (about US$1,321 including buyer's fees). The lot description noted, "VENEZIA Paolo Renier (1779-1789) Ducatone con Santa Giustina da 124 soldi - R Graffi al D/. Limatura sul bordo. BB. (republic of Venice, Paolo Renier, 1779-89, ducatone of St. Justina of 124 soldi. Scarce, Very fine.)" By this period, Venice was a ghost of her former power, surviving only on the sufferance of her Austrian and Turkish neighbors. Ducatoni were issued to this standard until the end of the republic. Other large silver coins included scudi (= 140 soldi), talleri, ducati as well as a variety of gold coins, especially ducats. This type was also struck with mintmaster LAF.

Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.

Specification: 28.10 g, 0.948 fine silver, 43-44 mm diameter, this specimen is 27,18 g.

Catalog reference: KM 707, Pao. 22, Dav-1565.
