Venice 1756 tallero Dav-1552
The specimen shown was lot 468 in Aureo y Calicó sale 242 (Barcelona, March 2012), where it sold for 520 € (about US$807 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Italia. 1756. Venecia. Francisco Loredano. 1 taler. Levísimas hojitas y rayitas. Preciosa pátina. Rara. MBC+. (Italy, Republic of Venice, tallero of 1756, doge Francisco Loredano. Light scratches, a few flaws, nice toning, rare, choice very fine.)"
The tallero was also theoretically 140 soldi but contained only 80% as much silver. By this period, Venice was a ghost of her former power, surviving only on the sufferance of her Austrian and Turkish neighbors. This one year type is rare.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 28.56 g, .835 fine silver, .766 troy oz ASW.
