Sincona sale 11, lot 1943

This specimen was lot 1943 in Sincona sale 11 (Zürich, May 2013), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALIEN Venedig Francesco Loredan, 1752-1762. 1/2 Tallero per il Levante 1756. Gerade 1 bei der Jahreszahl. 14.32 g. Sehr selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Winz. Schrötlingsf. Fast FDC. (republic of Venice, doge Francesco Loredan, 1752-62, half tallero for the Levant of 1756, straight '1' in the date. Very rare, especially in this quality, choice uncirculated.)"

By this period, Venice was a ghost of her former power, surviving only on the sufferance of her Austrian and Turkish neighbors. This half tallero accompanied the larger tallero (Dav-1552). Other large silver coins included ducatoni (= 124 soldi), talleri, ducati as well as a variety of gold coins, especially ducats.

Recorded mintage: unknown but not common.

Specification: 14.28 g, 0.835 fine silver, this specimen is 14.32 g.
