Venice (1779-89) soldo
This specimen was lot 1340 in Stephen Album sale 32 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2018), where it sold for $282. The catalog description[1] noted, "VENICE: Paolo Renier, 1779-1789, AE soldo, a superb quality example with ample original mint luster, NGC graded MS64." This billon coin had a face value of twelve bagattini. It is the only issue of this denomination for this ruler. While Venice is numismatically famous for her series of gold ducats, there is a long series of minor coinage which is frequently ignored. Small change for Paolo Renier include a half soldo (KM 696), a ten soldi (KM 693), a fifteen soldi (KM 694), an eighth tallero (KM 727) and an eighth scudo (KM 699). Twenty soldi made a lira.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 2.04 g, .031 fine silver, 22 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM-697. Cr-85.1.
