Heritage sale 3038, lot 34365

This specimen was lot 34365 in Heritage sale 3038 (Dallas, January 2015), where it sold for $1,175. The catalog description[2] noted, "Louis XVI Sol 1791-D MS66 Red PCGS. Lyon, (D), mint. A spectacular example of the type with captivating luster and unblemished surfaces. Most unusual in that this type was spent, not saved, so few could exist this choice." This specimen is a copper sol struck at the Lyon mint in 1791. It is common. Its face value was twelve deniers tournois. The type was struck 1777-91 and is known from Lyon for 1779, 1784-88, 1790-91. These circulated in France until the 1850's when they were finally called in and melted.

Recorded mintage: 1,734,146[1].

Specification: 12.24 g, copper, 28-31 mm diameter, plain edge, designed by Benjamin Duvivier.
