Künker sale 400, lot 375

This specimen was lot 375 in Künker sale 400 (Berlin, February 2024), where it sold for €2,400 (about US$3,114 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RÖMISCH-DEUTSCHES REICH, Maria Theresia, 1740-1780. Dukat 1762, Karlsburg. GOLD. Selten in dieser Erhaltung. Min. gewellt, vorzüglich/vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (Holy Roman Empire, Maria Theresia, 1740-80, ducat of 1762, Karlsburg mint. Scarce in this quality, slightly wavy, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

This ducat was struck for the redoubtable Maria Theresia 1746-65. A later type with a veiled bust (Fr-544) was minted 1765-80. Unlike the Empire, where Maria Theresia had to rule thru her husband Franz (and later her son Joseph), she was queen of Hungary outright.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.5 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 3.49 g.

Catalog reference: KM 610 (listed under Transylvania), Eypeltauer 353; Fr-543.
