Aureo y Calicó sale 448, lot 321

This specimen was lot 321 in Aureo y Calicó sale 448 (Barcelona, March 2025), where it sold for 1,400 € (about US$1,829 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "1789. Carlos IV. Seville. C. 8 reales. Light small scrapes. Nice. Very rare, especially in this condition, we have only had six examples before. EBC+ [choice extremely fine]. Ex Aureo 07/03/2001, no. 1799. Ex Aureo & Calico 03/18/2021, no. 331. Ex O'Callaghan Collection." This type was struck at Madrid and Seville (shown here) 1788-1808. It is scarce compared to the pesos of Latin America but not rare.

Recorded mintage: unknown but a better date.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.896 fine silver, 38 mm diameter, this specimen 26.97 g.

Catalog reference: Cayón-13833, KM 432.2, AC-1051, Dav-307.
