Prussia 1786-A 1/3 thaler KM-344

Künker sale 353, lot 3899

This specimen was part of lot 3899 in Künker sale 353 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), which sold for €340 (about US$473 including buyer's fees). The catalog description^[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich Wilhelm II. 1786-1797. 1/3 Reichstaler preuß. 1786 A, 1790 A, beide Münzstätte Berlin. 2 Stück., Vorzüglich. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick William II, 1786-97, one-third thaler of 1786, Berlin mint. [One of] two pieces, extremely fine.)"

The 1/12 thaler was retired in 1772 and the 1/6 thaler was retired in 1778 but this denomination carried on to the end of the century. One third thaler was half a gulden. This type was struck 1786-98 at Berlin, Breslau and Konigsberg.
