Künker sale 353, lot 3525

This specimen was lot 3525 in Künker sale 353 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €280 (about US$390 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich II. der Große, 1740-1786. Reichstaler preuß. 1786, E, Königsberg. Greisenantlitz. Kanonenrohr mit sichtbarer Mündung und auf der rechten Seite der Waffengruppe 5 Spitzen. Mit Laubrand. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick II the Great, 1740-86, thaler of 1786, Königsberg mint, old head. The cannon barrel has a breech and the right weapons group has five points. The edge is decorated with leaves. Very fine to extremely fine.)"

This type was struck at Berlin, Breslau and Königsberg (shown here) 1775-86. These coins saw hard use and are frequently found heavily worn. As they were only 0.750 fine, they were spent and the issues of other principalities hoarded. This is the final date.

Recorded mintage: 100,092.

Specification: 22.27 g, 0.750 fine silver, this specimen is 21,90 g.

Catalog reference: KM 332.3, Dav-2590; Olding 111 b 2; Kluge 132.6.
