This specimen is one of a series minted 1821-22 in Guanajuato during the Iturbide's regime. Altho it uses a local version of the "standard bust" of Ferdinand, none were struck by the royalists. The mounting anarchy unleashed during the War of Independence forced the royal authorities to open branch mints, of which Guanajuato was one of the more prolific. The date is somewhat scarce but the SCWC prices the type over double the standard Mexico City issue. Assayer JM is recorded for 1821-22 but not any coins struck for the Republic. The Guanajuato mint remained open after independence, striking coins for the Republic of Mexico until 1900.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 6.77 g, 0.896 fine silver, .196 troy oz ASW.
