Aureo sale 238, lot 51

This specimen was lot 51 in Aureo & Calicó sale 238 (Barcelona, November 2011), where it sold for 220 euro (about US$349 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1822. Durango. CG. 8 reales. Atractiva pátina. Escasa así. MBC+. (eight reales of 1822, Durango mint. Nice toning, scarce thus, choice very fine.)"

The Durango mint was opened in 1812 by the royalists during the Mexican war of independence and operated until 1895. It struck eight reales with the portrait of Ferdinand VII 1812-22; only the later dates (1819-22) are reasonably common. Many are very crude.
