Sincona sale 9, lot 4310

This specimen was lot 4310 in Sincona sale 9 (Zurich, October 2012), where it sold for 520 CHF (about US$658 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANKREICH Premier Empire. Napoleon I. 1804-1815. 20 Francs 1811, Bordeaux. Fast vorzüglich. (France, first empire, Napoleon I, 1804-15, twenty francs of 1811, Bordeaux mint. Choice extremely fine.)"

The French empire under Napoleon produced large quantities of gold coins, made from metal looted from countries he conquered. However, nearly all of it was produced at Paris, leaving the branch mint issues quite scarce today. The type was struck 1809-15 in large quantities and common dates are readily available today. Le Franc[2] warns against specimens with the hair and laurel wreath re-engraved, as this usually comes weak.

Recorded mintage: 10,827; compare to 3,702,681 from Paris.

Specification: 6.45 g, 0.900 fine gold, 21 mm diameter, edge lettered *DIEU PROTEGE LA FRANCE*, this specimen 6,40 g.

Catalog reference: Gad. 1025. Schl. 76. Fr-513, F.516/18.
