This specimen was lot 4168 in Künker sale 353 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €1,400 (about US$1,948 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Wilhelm I. 1861-1888. Doppelter Vereinstaler 1866, C. Dunkle Patina, kl. Kratzer, fast Stempelglanz aus polierter Platte. Exemplar der Slg. Friedrich Otto, Rittergut Passendorf, Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 126, Osnabrück 2007, Nr. 2582. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, William I, 1861-88, double union thaler of 1866. Dark toning, minor scratches, about uncirculated on a proof planchet.)"
After defeating Austria in the war of 1866, Prussia annexed the kingdom of Hannover and the free city of Frankfurt, among other states. The mints there were converted into branch mints (B = Hannover, C = Frankfurt) and operated 1867-78. This double thaler of 1865-71 is the most common type for Prussia and this product of the Frankfurt mint is the second most common date. After unification, it circulated for six marks.
Recorded mintage: 226,123.
Specification: 37.04 g, 0.900 fine silver, this specimen 36.95 g.
