Heritage sale 3064, lot 30614
China H3064-30614r.jpg

This specimen was lot 30614 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $2,160. The catalog description[1] noted, "People's Republic platinum Proof Unicorn 100 Yuan (1 oz) 1996-P PR63 Ultra Cameo NGC. A stunning selection whose obverse features a Western Unicorn and maiden, with the reverse showing the images of an Eastern Unicorn. The appearance is pleasing, with nicely mirrored fields contrasting starkly with the heavily frosted devices. Light contact marks define the grade. A rare issue with mintage of only 500 pieces." The Chinese government has, since the mid 1980's, produced a mind boggling array of bullion related collectibles. A complete set is thousands of types yet buyers clamor for more. This type is one of several unicorn themed NCLT's issued in 1996 (KM 938, 5 yuan, silver; KM 939, 5 yuan, gold; KM 941, 10 yuan, silver; KM 942, 10 yuan, gold; KM 943, 25 yuan, gold; KM 944, 25 yuan, platinum; KM 946, 50 yuan, gold; KM 945, 50 yuan, silver; KM 976, 150 yuan, silver). The popularity of this series must have dwindled as it was terminated before the end of the decade.

Recorded mintage: 500 proofs.

Specification: 31.10 g, 0.999 fine platinum.

Catalog reference: KM 948, Fr-B111.
