This specimen was lot 71714 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $10,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHINA. Platinum 100 Yuan, 1997-P. Unicorn Series. NGC PROOF-69 Ultra Cameo. One of the most desired issues of the entire Unicorn series, this example provides amazing strike and details illuminated by the deep cameo contrast. Approaching perfection, this piece can boast avoiding the ugly spotting, haze, or marking that is sometimes seen on these modern bullion commemorative." One hundred yuan issued in 1997 include KM 991, 994, 1008, 1009, 1010, 1015, 1021, 1034 (shown here) and 1092. The popularity of the unicorn series must have dwindled as it was terminated before the end of the decade.
