This specimen was lot 32121 in Heritage sale 3081 (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $8,400. The catalog description[1] noted, "China: People's Republic platinum Proof Panda 10 Yuan (1/10 oz) 1997 PR69 Deep Cameo PCGS. An extremely rare platinum fractional Panda, scarcely offered particularly in this exalted a grade. Essentially a perfect coin, with snow-white surfaces evincing considerable brilliance, some elements of the design coated in matte frost and others left reflective. One of the key types of the ever-popular Panda series." Altho the regime has steadily issued panda coins in silver and gold since 1983, platinum issues are sporadic. This denomination was issued in platinum in 1990 and 1993-97.
