Heritage sale 3020, lot 23415

This specimen was lot 23415 in Heritage sale 3020 (Long Beach, September 2012), where it sold for $1,410. The catalog description[1] noted, "Carlos IIII gold 8 Escudos 1803-FJ, AU58 Details ANACS cleaned, boldly struck and quite attractive, very lightly cleaned long ago." This type was struck 1791-1808 and is reasonably available. Note the use of Charles III's bust and the name of Charles IV. An 1803/2 overdate is reported for the year.

Recorded mintage: 44,000.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.875 fine gold, .761 troy oz AGW.
