Bolivia 1803-PTS PJ 8 escudos
This specimen was lot 1039 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $3,220. The catalog description[1] noted, "1803 PJ 8 escudos. Potosi mint. MS-62 (NGC). Types as above. Lustrous yellow gold with reflective surfaces. Extremely flashy, but a short diagonal scratch off the forehead of Carlos IV. Otherwise this coin would be nearly a gem. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942."
While silver coins from Bolivia exist in vast quantities, gold from Bolivia is scarce. For the colonial period, Colombia may be regarded as the most prolific issuer, followed by Mexico, followed by Peru. Bolivia, Chile and Guatemala are minor sources. This type was minted 1791-1808 and is scarce.
