This specimen was lot 30632 in Heritage sale 3042 (Long Beach, September 2015), where it sold for $2,702.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Charles IV gold 8 Escudos 1803 M-FA AU58 NGC, Madrid mint. Lustrous, nearly Mint state with scant high-point wear and mild surface abrasions. One of the key dates of the type, very scarce in any grade and rare in this engaging quality, with only one example currently certified finer by NGC." SCWC lists three dates for this type: 1802, 1803 and 1805 with 1803 the scarcest. All were struck at Madrid.
