Chile 1802-So JJ 8 escudos
This specimen was lot 1351 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $977.50. It was one of a series struck 1791-1808 during the reign of Charles IV. It bears Charles' name and the bust of Charles III, died 1788. The bust of Charles IV appears on the 4 escudos but not the 8 escudos. This type is fairly common for Spanish colonial gold. Assayer JJ is recorded for this date only. The catalog description[1] noted, "1802 JJ 8 escudos. Santiago mint. AU-53 (NGC). Types as above. Medium gold with deep golden brown toning in the recesses, where traces of lustre remain. Some hairlines, obverse rim nick at 9:00. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942."
