This specimen was lot 20550 in Heritage sale 3010 (Boston, August 2010), where it sold for $2,530. The catalog description[1] noted, "Carlos IIII gold 8 Escudos 1801-AJ, MS61 PCGS, full luster with light original patina, very scarce in mint state." The specimen was one of a series struck 1791-1808 during the reign of Charles IV. It bears Charles' name and the bust of Charles III, who died in 1788. The bust of Charles IV appears on the four escudos but not the eight escudos. This type is fairly common for Spanish colonial gold.

Recorded mintage: 46,000.
