Chile 1800-So JA 8 escudos
This specimen was lot 836 in Aureo y Calicó sale 243 (Barcelona, April 2012), where it sold for 1,530 € (about US$2,312 including buyer's fees).
The catalog[1] noted,
"1800. Carlos IV. Santiago. JA. 8 escudos. Único año de este ensayador. Bella. Gran parte de brillo original. Muy escasa así. MBC+/EBC-. (Eight escudos of 1800, Santiago mint, the only year for this assayer. Nice, much luster, scarce, about extremely fine.)"
The specimen was one of a series struck 1791-1808 during the reign of Charles IV. It bears Charles' name and the bust of Charles III, who died in 1788. The bust of Charles IV appears on the four escudos but not the eight escudos. This type is fairly common for Spanish colonial gold.
Recorded mintage: 54,000 for assayers DA, JA and AJ.
