Sincona sale 69, lot 1294

This specimen was lot 1294 in Sincona sale 69 (Zürich, May 2021), where it sold for 250 CHF (about US$332 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"CZECHYA | Böhmen. Friedrich V. von der Pfalz (Winterkönig), 1619-1622. Kipper-24 Kreuzer 1620, Kuttenberg. Münzmeister Sebastian Hölzl. Sehr schön. Leichte Prägeschwäche. (kingdom of Bohemia, Frederick V of the Palatinate, the Winter King, 1619-22, kipper 24 kreuzer of 1620, Kuttenberg mint. Very fine, Slightly weakly struck.)"

Kipper 24 kreuzer were struck at Kuttenberg, Prague and Joachimsthal for the Protestant Frederick V. Altho nominally a one-third thaler, it is too light and is probably debased as well, being an inflationary issue (1620-24) of the Thirty Years War, along with six, 15, 48, 30, 60, 75, 120, 150 and 300 groschen. Once the kipper period was over, there was a concerted effort to recall and melt down the debased issues, accounting for their rarity today. This type was struck in numerous varieties (KM 226, KM 227, 228, KM 237, KM 238 (shown here), KM 239, 240, 241, 242, 243) at Prague, Joachimsthal and Kuttenberg.

Reported Mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 7.31 g.

Catalog reference: KM 238, Dietiker 581, Herinek 32.
