This specimen was lot 72236 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $720. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN. Cob 4 Reales, 1620-MD Go. Madrid Mint. Philip III. PCGS AU-58. A deeply toned and well-preserved 4 Reales piece from Madrid. The obverse offers a clear denomination, mintmark, assayer, and ordinal. The reverse is well-centered but somewhat weakly struck, displaying the crucial final digit of the date. A nice piece with very light handling and satisfying detail. From the Pat Johnson Collection." This type was struck at Madrid 1615 and 1620-21 only and is very scarce. Other mints striking four reales during the reign of Philip II include Valladolid, Granada, Segovia, Seville and Toledo.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 13.73 g, 0.931 fine silver, this specimen 13.46 g.
