This specimen was lot 7059 in Ponterio sale 152 (New York, January 2010), where it sold for $2,300. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE. 8 Escudos, 1790-DA. SCARCE three-year type. Bust of Charles III; legend: 'CAROL . IV.' NGC AU-55." This type was struck in Santiago, Chile, during the transition from Charles III (1759-88) and Charles IV (1788-1808). The Santiago mint never used the bust of Charles IV on its eight escudos, continuing the use of the bust of Charles III. The only difference between the transitional type shown here and the standard type is the king's ordinal, which is "IIII" on KM 54.
