Ponterio sale 177, lot 34641

This specimen was lot 34641 in Ponterio sale 177 (Chicago, August 2013), where it sold for $452.37. The catalog description^[1] noted, "FRANCE. Ecu, 1716-K. Bordeaux Mint. PCGS Genuine--Cleaning, Unc Details Secure Holder." This is an écu vertugadin of the Bordeaux mint, struck while Louis XV was a minor. Droulers^[2] notes the 1716-K as fairly common as "flan reformé" (struck over an earlier type) while "flans neufs" are rare. A few, extremely rare 1716-K écu aux trois couronnes are reported. The specimen shown is a "flan reformé." The type was struck 1715-18 in substantial numbers but was replaced by the écu de France-Navarre, which is only 24.47 grams. At the time of issue, it had a face value of 5 livres tournois, which rose to 15 livres in July 1720 but was demonetized in September 1720 at a value of 13 livres, 2 sols, 6 deniers.

Recorded mintage: est. 131,328 (new blanks) plus a larger number rf.

Specification: 30.59 g, 0.917 fine silver, .902 troy oz ASW, 41 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM, designed by Norbert Roëttiers.
