Künker sale 400, lot 467

This specimen was lot 467 in Künker sale 400 (Berlin, February 2024), where it sold for €33,500 (about US$43,460 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANKREICH, KÖNIGREICH, Louis XV, 1715-1774. Double louis d'or aux insignes 1716, K, Bordeaux. LVD · XV · D · G · FR · ET · NAV · REX · 1716 (Kreis mit Punkt) Büste r.//CHRS · REGN - VINC · IMP · (Lilie) Gekröntes ovales Wappen vor gekreuzter Hand der Gerechtigkeit und Zepter, unten · K ·. In US-Plastikholder der NGC mit der Bewertung AU 58 (5790008-029). (kingdom of France, Louis XV, 1715-74, gold double louis of the insignia of 1716, Bordeaux mint. Obverse: bust right; reverse: crowned oval arms over crossed hand of justice and scepter, mintmark below. Graded NGC AU58.)"

This is the second example of this scarce type we are able to post on the Wiki despite being struck at twenty-two mints in 1716 (plus Pau). It had a face value of 40 livres tournois. The early years of Louis XV saw many manipulations of the gold coinage, with the result that the double louis was usually skipped. A few double louis d'or Mirliton are known for 1723-24, after which the next double Louis is the double louis d'or au bandeau of 1742-70.

Recorded mintage: 28,400[2].

Specification: 16.31 g, 0.917 fine gold, 31-32 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by Norbert Roëttiers.
