Heritage sale 61259, lot 99095

The first specimen was lot 2172 in Sincona sale 18 (Zürich, May 2014), where it did not sell. The catalog description^[1] noted,

"Ecu vertugadin 1716. Rennes Sehr schön. (kingdom of France, Louis XV, écu vertugadin of 1716, Rennes mint, very fine.)"

The second specimen was lot 99095 in Heritage sale 61259 (Dallas, TX, February 2022), where it sold for $480. The catalog description^[2] noted, "France: Louis XV Ecu 1716-(9) AU53 NGC, Rennes mint. Ecu Vertugadin. Flan Reforme, rosette below bust. Displaying a satisfying cabinet tone across fully embossed surfaces lightly obscured by details of the host coin." This is an écu vertugadin of the Rennes mint, struck while Louis XV was a minor. Droulers^[3] notes the 1716-9 as common as "flan reformé" (struck over an earlier type) while "flans neufs" are accorded a 20% premium. The specimen shown is a "flan reformé." The type was struck 1715-18 in substantial numbers but was replaced by the écu de France-Navarre, which is only 24.47 grams.

Recorded mintage: 2,024,000 on new blanks and 1,281,848 restruck.

Specification: 30.59 g, 0.917 fine silver, 41 mm diameter, lettered edge, designed by Norbert Roëttiers, this specimen 30.37 g.
