This specimen was lot 99070 in Heritage sale 61259 (Dallas, TX, February 2022), where it sold for $5,040. The catalog description[1] noted, "France: Seemingly Unpublished Flan Neuf 1/20 Ecu Vertugadin, Louis XV 1/20 Ecu (6 Sols) 1716-K AU53 NGC, Bordeaux mint. 1/20 Ecu Vertugadin. Flan Neuf. Exceedingly scarce as a type evidenced by the sheer paucity of examples to appear at auction in recent decades. Gadoury only notes examples from this issue as Flan Reforme, denoted by a rosette below the young king's bust. Notably lacking here, Duplessy notes he is uncertain of Flan Neuf examples existing. Here we have such an example featuring charcoal appearances gently obscuring a lightly granular surface that hosts surprisingly crisp engraved details capped by trivial instances of handling. Sure to entice the French specialist." Twentieth écus vertugadin were struck for Louis XV prior to the reform of 1726 but are rare. This type had a face value of five sols tournois at the time of issue (1715-18). The flans reformés were struck over old 1/20 écus of Louis XIV.
