Shown is a forty sols de Strasbourg struck in 1716 at the Strasbourg mint while king Louis XV was a minor. Droulers[1] notes that all known examples are struck "flan reformés," i.e., over earlier types. The type was struck until 1718 to circulate in Alsace to complete with German half thalers circulating there. The first specimen was lot 1328 in Sincona sale 11 (Zürich, May 2013), where it did not sell. The catalog description[2] noted,

"FRANKREICH Louis XV. 1715-1774. 1/2 Ecu 1716, Strassburg. Réformation. Sehr schön. (France, Louis XV, 1715-74, half écu of 1716, Strasbourg mint, reformed. Very fine.)"

The second specimen was lot 1694 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €1,000 (about US$1,292 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[3] noted,

"KÖNIGREICH Louis XV, 1715-1774. Pièce de deux livres de Strasbourg 1716, BB, Strasbourg. Réformation. RR Attraktives Exemplar mit hübscher Patina, min. Überprägungsspuren, vorzüglich. (kingdom of France, Louis XV, 1715-74, piece of two livres of Strasbourg of 1716. Rare, attractive toning, minimal evidence of undertype, extremely fine.)"

The third specimen was lot 1392 in Jean Elsen sale 141 (Brussels, June 2019), where it sold for €200 (about US$265 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[4] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XV (1715-1774), AR 2 livres de Strasbourg (40 sols), 1716BB. Réformation. D/ B. enfantin à d., dr. et cuir. R/ Ecu de France couronné, accosté de la date. Rare. Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Louis XV, 1715-74, silver double livre of Strasbourg of 1716, reformed. Obverse: draped and armored infant bust right; reverse: crowned arms of France divide the date. Rare, Very Fine.)"

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 12.39 g, 0.833 fine silver, 33-35.5 mm diameter, plain edge, designed by Norbert Roëttiers. The first specimen is 12.01 g, the third specimen is 12,06 g.
