Goldberg sale 128, lot 1756

This specimen was lot 1756 in Goldberg sale 128 (Los Angeles, June 2022), where it sold for $1,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "France. Ecu, 1716-X (Amiens). Large flan. Louis XV. Draped young bust right. Reverse: Crowned arms. Signs of over striking on earlier type. White original luster. Pop 1; the Finest graded at PCGS. PCGS graded MS-62." The type was struck 1715-18 in substantial numbers but was replaced by the écu de France-Navarre, which is only 24.47 grams. This is a common date, especially on "flans reformées".

Recorded mintage: 137,664 fn + unknown rf[2].

Specification: 30.59 g, 0.917 fine silver, 41 mm diameter, lettered edge, designed by Norbert Roëttiers.
