This specimen was lot 1585 in Jean Elsen sale 112 (Brussels, March 2012) where it sold for € 160 (about US$250 including buyer's fee). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRABANT, Duché, François II (1792-1797), AR couronne, 1793 A, Vienne. Type brabançon. Droit: Tête l. à droite. Revers: Croix de Bourgogne entre trois couronnes, ornée du bijou de la Toison d'or. Léger défaut du flan sur la tranche. Superbe à Fleur de Coin (Duchy of Brabant, Francis II, 1792-97, silver kronenthaler of 1793, Vienna mint, Burgundian type. Obverse: laureate head to right; reverse: Burgundian cross divides three crowns, decorated with the Order of the Golden Fleece. Small planchet defect on edge, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"
This type was struck in 1792-97 during the reign of Franz II, the last Holy Roman Emperor. This type is listed under the Austrian Netherlands (modern Belgium) even tho this specimen was struck in Vienna (mintmark "A"). Others are known from Prague (mintmark "C"), Karlsburg (mintmark "E"), Hall (mintmark "F"), Nagybanya (mintmark "G"), Günzburg (mintmark "H") and Milan (mintmark "M") but none actually made in Brussels. The design bears the Burgundian cross on the reverse, so perhaps that is why this coin is filed there. The lower, Catholic part of the Netherlands was Spanish until 1714, when it passed to the Austrians, who lost it to Revolutionary France in 1797. After the fall of Napoleon in 1815, Belgium passed to the king of the Netherlands.
Recorded mintage: unknown but common.
Specification: 29.44 g, 0.873 fine silver, .826 troy oz ASW, this specimen 29.60 g.
