JE160-1241r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1241 in Jean Elsen sale 160 (Brussels, November 2024), where it sold for €120 (about US$152 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, François II (1792-1797), AR couronne, 1793 M, Milan. Type brabançon. D/ T. laurée à d. R/ Croix de Bourgogne entre trois couronnes, ornée du bijou de la Toison d'or. Traces d'ajustage au revers. Très Beau à Superbe. (duchy of Brabant, silver kronenthaler of 1793, Milan mint, Burgundian type. Obverse: laureate head right; reverse: Burgundian cross between three crowns, decorated with the jewels of the Golden Fleece. Adjustment marks on the reverse, very fine to extremely fine.)"

Altho the couronne or kronenthaler is often filed under the Austrian Netherlands, it was struck all over the Hapsburg dominions with the following mintmarks:

  • A = Vienna
  • B = Kremnitz
  • C = Prague
  • E = Alba Julia or Karlsburg
  • F = Hall
  • G = Baia Mare or Nagybanya
  • H = Gunzburg
  • M = Milan (shown here)

This type was struck 1792-1801 but no mint struck them every year. This is a common date. Austria lost Milan to the French in 1797.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 29.44 g, 0.873 fine silver, 39 mm diameter, lettered edge, engraved by Théodore Van Berckel; this specimen is 29,48 g.
