from Sincona sale 11, lot 2371

This specimen was lot 2371 in Sincona sale 11 (Zürich, May 2013), where it sold for 250 CHF (about US$310 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RDR/ÖSTERREICH Joseph II. 1765-1790. Scudo 1784, Mailand. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Austria, Leopold II, 1790-92, scudo of 1784, Milan mint, very fine to extremely fine.)"

This type was struck for Joseph II 1781-86 and succeeded a similar coin made for Maria Theresia (Dav-1386). It was superseded by the kronenthaler or crocione of 1786-90. Austria lost Milan to the French in 1797.

Specification: 22.64 g, 0.896 fine silver, 39 mm diameter, this specimen 22.97 g.
