Milan 1783-LB scudo Dav-1387
This specimen was lot 3403 in Sincona sale 83 (Zürich, May 2023), where it sold for 500 CHF (about US$669 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "OSTERREICH, Joseph II. 1765-1790. Scudo 1783, Mailand. Mit der Signatur LB (Michael Leitner und Antonio Brusasorci, Münzmeister in Mailand). Vorzüglich'. Patina (Austria, Joseph II, 1765-90, scudo of 1783, Milan mint, with mintmasters' initials LB. Extremely fine, Toned)." Altho Joseph II was indeed the Holy Roman Emperor, this scudo was issued in his capacity as duke of Milan, which the Austrians ruled 1714-97 and 1814-59. This type was struck 1781-86 and is not rare. It was superseded by the kronenthaler or crocione of 1786-90.
Recorded mintage: unknown but a better date.
