Austria 1794M thaler rev DSLR.jpg

This type was struck in 1792-1801 during the reign of Franz II, the last Holy Roman Emperor. This type is identical to kronenthalers struck elsewhere in the Hapsburg dominions even tho this specimen was struck in Milan (mintmark "M"). Others are known from Prague (mintmark "C"), Karlsburg (mintmark "E"), Hall (mintmark "F"), Nagybanya (mintmark "G"), Günzburg (mintmark "H") and Vienna (mintmark "A"). The design bears the Burgundian cross on the reverse, so perhaps that is why this coin is filed under Austrian Netherlands. The duchy of Milan was Spanish until 1714, when it passed to the Austrians, who lost it to Revolutionary France in 1797. After the fall of Napoleon in 1815, it returned to Hapsburg rule until the unification of Italy in 1859-60.

Recorded mintage: unknown but common.

Specification: 29.44 g, 0.873 fine silver, .826 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: Dav-1390, KM C59.1.
