Belgium 1790 lion d'or
This specimen was lot 264 in UBS sale 84 (Basel, January 2010). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Vereinigte Belgische Provinzen. Lion d'or 1790, Brüssel. Löwe nach links mit Schwert und Schild worauf LI/BER/TAS, im Abschnitt die Jahreszahl. Rv. Elf Wappenschilde um strahlende Sonne. Sehr selten. Kl. Kr. Fast FDC." (United Belgian Provinces, lion d'or of 1790, Brussels mint. Obv: lion facing left with sword and shield, date in exergue, shield inscribed "LI/BER/TAS" in three lines. Rev: shields surround shining sun. Very rare, nice Uncirculated).
This type was struck 1790 during a brief insurrection against Austrian rule. The SCWC lists this as a 14 florin piece. The Dutch were issuing a 14 gulden gold coin about this time but this writer is not certain if they were intended to be the same weight.
