Jean Elsen sale 158, lot 758

This specimen was lot 758 in Jean Elsen sale 158 (Brussels, March 2024), where it sold for €650 (about US$845 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Etats-Belgiques-Unis (1790), AR florin, 1790, Bruxelles. Deuxième type. D/ Lion deb. à d. R/ Deux mains serrées sortant des nuées, ten. un faisceau de onze flèches. Très légères traces d'ajustage. Superbe à Fleur de Coin. (duchy of Brabant, States of United Belgium. silver florin of 1790, Brussels mint, second type. Obverse: lion rampant right; reverse: two hands emerge from clouds, clutching a bundle of eleven arrows. Light traces of adjustment marks, Extremely Fine - Uncirculated.)"

This type was struck in 1790 during a brief insurrection against Austrian rule. Another type (KM 48) was also issued in 1790 with a different obverse legend. The insurrection was crushed and a few years later, Belgium was occupied and annexed by revolutionary France. Belgium would not obtain its independence until 1830.
