Stack's Bowers 2022 NYINC sale, lot 6795

This specimen was lot 6795 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $810. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Ecu, 1648-M. Toulouse Mint. Louis XIV. PCGS AU-55. A moderately struck Ecu of the Sun King as a child, with bright luster remaining in the fields and light argent surfaces. Some light die adjustment marks are noted on the reverse center." The specimen shown is an écu à la mèche longue struck in Toulouse during the reign of Louis XIV. Toulouse struck this type 1647-54. Droulers[2] prices this date about 25% higher than the common date (1651-A).

Recorded mintage: 119,501[2].
