The specimen shown is an écu à la mèche courte struck at the Matignon workshop in Paris during the reign of Louis XIV. Droulers[1] prices this variety, with the rose on the reverse, as the most common of 1644. Louvre issues were marked with a star and are slightly scarcer. This specimen was lot 23200 in Ponterio sale 163 (Baltimore, November 2011), where it sold for $345. The catalog description[2] noted, "FRANCE. Ecu, 1644-A. Louis XIV (1643-1715). VERY FINE."

Recorded mintage: est. 600,000.

Specification: 27.45 g, 0.917 fine silver, plain edge, designed by Jean Warin and Isaac Briot.
