The specimen shown is a douziéme d'écu à la mèche courte struck in Paris at the Matignon shop during the minority of Louis XIV of France (r. 1643-1715). This is a "short lock" variety. The "long lock" variety, struck 1646-60, is distinguished by the longer lock of hair growing in front of the young king's ear. Altho the "short lock" variety was struck only three years, millions were minted in that time, so the type is not rare. The second specimen was lot 74712 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2025), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. 1/12 Ecu, 1644-A. Paris Mint. Louis XIV. PCGS MS-62. Variety with point. From the Richard August Collection. Ex: Enterprise Collection (Heritage Numismatic Auctions, Inc. - 1/2004) Lot # 14615."

Recorded mintage: 1,171,393 (variety with rose after date).

Specification: 2.28 g, 0.917 fine silver, 19-20 mm diameter, plain edge, designed by Isaac Briot.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 723A, Dr/2 № 297. The second specimen is KM-140.1; Gad-111.
