Jean Elsen sale 141, lot 1212

This specimen was lot 1212 in Jean Elsen sale 141 (Brussels, June 2019), where it sold for €280 (about US$371 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AR quart d'écu, 1644C, Saint-Lô. Frappé au marteau. D/ Croix fleurdelisée. LVD XIIII dans la légende. R/ Ecu de France couronné, entre II-II. Rare Petit coup sur la tranche. presque Superbe. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, silver quarter écu of 1644, Saint-Lô mint, struck by the hammer. Obverse: floriate cross, LVD XIIII in the legend; reverse: crowned arms of France divides the value. Rare, small rim nick, about Extremely Fine.)"

This type was hammered at the Saint-Lô mint 1643-47 and this is a fairly common date. Hammered quarter écus were made as late as 1652.

Recorded mintage: 79,430.

Specification: 9.71 g, 0.917 fine silver, plain edge, this specimen 9,51 g.
