France 1648-G ecu

from Jean Elsen sale 134, lot 1693

This specimen was lot 1693 in Jean Elsen sale 134 (Brussels, September 2017), where it did not sell. The catalog description^[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XIV (1643-1715), AR écu à la mèche longue, 1648G, Poitiers. D/ B. enfantin, l., dr. et cuir. à d. R/ Ecu de France couronné. Légère porosité du flan. Belle patine. Très Beau à Superbe. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, silver écu of the long hair of 1648, Poitiers mint. obverse: infant bust to right, laureate, draped and armored; reverse: crowned arms of France. Light porosity, nice patina, very fine to extremely fine.)"

The specimen shown is an écu à la mèche longue struck in Poitiers during the reign of Louis XIV. Poitiers struck this type 1647-48 and 1652. We don't see another issue of écus from this mint until 1690 altho production of demi-écus continued.

Recorded mintage: 17,172 (fairly common; Droulers^[2] suggests fraud in the reported mintage).

Specification: 27.45 g, 0.917 fine silver, plain edge, designed by Jean Warin or Isaac Briot, this specimen 27,15 g.
