Künker sale 264, lot 3074

This specimen was lot 3074 in Künker sale 264 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €660 (about US$853 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"KÖNIGREICH Louis XIV, 1643-1715. Louis d'or à la mèche courte 1648, AR und Ratte, Arras. GOLD. Sehr schön. (kingdom of France, Louis XIV, 1643-1715, gold louis of the short hair of 1648, "rat" mintmark, Arras mint, very fine.)"

The louis d'or à la mèche longue, struck 1646-59 at numerous mints, is among the more available louis d'or of Louis XIV. The mint at Arras, which closed in 1656, was peculiar in placing the mintmark "AR" on the obverse and the mint master's privy mark (the rat) on the reverse where other mints placed the mint letter. This oddity, plus the low mintages emanating from this locale, earn this coin a substantial premium over the common Paris mint issue.
