H61259-99039r.jpg

This specimen was lot 99039 in Heritage sale 61259 (Dallas, TX, February 2022), where it sold for $384. The catalog description[1] noted, "France: Louis XIV 1/4 Ecu 1648-M XF Details (Bent) NGC, Toulouse mint. 1/4 Ecu a la meche longue. A wonderful type featuring a gently handled bust of the "Sun King" hosted by an even argent patina. While NGC notes a bend, we find no such evidence confirming this qualifier." This type was struck 1646-60 at numerous mints but never in the numbers of the 1/12 écu, half écu or écu. Hammered quart d'écu au marteau were still being struck in 1648 at Limoges, Bayonne (Dr/4 № 428), Amiens (Dr/4 № 429) and Morlaàs (Dr/4 № 433).

Recorded mintage: 10,300[2], a scarce date.

Specification: 6.86 g, 0.917 fine silver, 27 mm diameter, plain edge, designed by Jean Warin.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 646, Dr/2 № 304, KM 162.13, Gad-140 (R4), Dupl-1471, Dr/4 № 646, Dr/2 № 304.
